The 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships will start in Kitakyushu, Japan on October 18th. The best athletes from all over the world will compete for the coveted awards. During the Olympic season, the participants had the opportunity to replenish their track record with another triumph. Increased attention will be focused on the Russian national team, which is bringing ambitious gymnasts to Japan. Where and when will the championship take place?
The organizers decided not to force the athletes to perform in a too tight schedule, it was originally planned to hold all the disciplines in five days. But in the tense post-coronavirus and Olympic season, the risk of injury increases significantly, so it was decided to meet the participants halfway. For a whole week – from October 18 to October 24, the best gymnasts from all over the world will go on various apparatus and prove their worth.
The championship is hosted by the Japanese city of Kitakyushu, since the country held the Olympics at a high level and earned the full confidence of the athletes. Initially, Danish Copenhagen was chosen as the venue. But the country waived such a right in 2020 as it was experiencing great difficulty with coronavirus restrictions.

What disciplines will the participants compete in?
Over the course of seven days, athletes will take part in various types of programs. This will allow the same gymnasts to show off their skills on several apparatus at once. For the convenience of fans of this sport, we have compiled a schedule of the 2021 World Artistic Gymnastics Championship, which will give a complete picture of the directions present:
- October 18 – Women's Qualification;
- October 19 – women's and men's qualifications;
- October 20 – Men's Qualification;
- October 21 – women's all-around;
- October 22 – men's all-around;
- October 23 – competitions in floor exercises for men, women's vault, men's performance on a horse, uneven bars for women and men's programs on rings;
- October 24 – Men's Vault, Women on Balance Beam, Men's Parallel Bars, Women's Floor Exercise and Men's Crossbar.
A rich competition program is aimed at giving more athletes the opportunity to prove themselves. Therefore, almost every national team will send a solid delegation of gymnasts to Japan.
Member countries
The competition is attended by 56 countries, which will bring a certain number of athletes to the tournament. Depending on the previous successes, a quota was issued, in accordance with which the composition of the national team was formed. The teams with the maximum application deserve special attention – Canada, China, Egypt, Italy, Japan (as the host), Russia, South Korea, Ukraine and the USA. It is noteworthy that a rather large delegation was gathered by Colombia, Great Britain, Hungary, Mexico and Switzerland – nine athletes each. But not all participants got the opportunity to load the competition program so seriously. Only one gymnast will represent Albania, Luxembourg, Panama, the Philippines and Syria.

Russian national team: composition and chances of winning
The Russian national team performed well at the Olympics and brought a large number of awards in artistic gymnastics. But at the same time, almost all the representatives of that line-up refused to participate in the new start. They connected this with a difficult season, during which they had to give up their last strength. It would be practically impossible to endure the second such major championship with a difference of several months, it is very dangerous for health. It is for this reason that the composition of the competition participants from the Russian national team is as follows:
- Men – Ivan Stretovich, Vladislav Polyashov, Nikita Ignatiev, Sergei Naidin, Mukhammadzhon Yakubov and Grigory Klimentyev;
- For women – Angelina Melnikova, Vladislav Urazov, Yana Vorona and Maria Minaeva.
The list of losses of the Russian national team also looks quite impressive – Nikita Nagorny, Artur Dalaloyan, David Belyavsky and Denis Ablyazin, who glorified the country at the Olympic Games, decided to refuse to participate in the competition, citing poor physical condition. And the main female star Victoria Listunova injured her elbow and did not try to act through the pain, so as not to aggravate the damage.
Favorites of the 2021 World Cup in artistic gymnastics
One of the main favorites of the competition is the national team of Japan. At the Olympic Games, she won five medals, and Daiki Hashimoto especially tried. Now he will definitely try to fill up his track record. Moreover, the main competitors from the Russian national team will not come, which the representatives of Japan will definitely try to use. Due to strong female gymnasts, the United States of America has traditionally climbed high. Sunisa Lee and Jade Carey will once again try to pull the competition on their shoulders.
China will not miss the chance to take advantage of the weakness of the Russian delegation, which took eight sets of medals at the Olympics at once – three of them of the highest standard. Liu Yang and Zou Jingyuan in men, as well as Guan Chenchen and Tang Xijing in women, will try to once again demonstrate their highest level.
